Every parent house-hunting with a young child eventually asks me some version of the same question: does this primary school matter later? Most of the time, no. But for a specific, short list of schools, it genuinely does — MOE runs a formal Primary–Secondary affiliation system that gives graduating cohorts priority in a later Secondary 1 posting round. The problem is that the version of this list most sites keep recycling has gaps. I checked this one directly against MOE Schoolfinder’s own records, school by school — it’s missing at least two real pairs I could confirm independently (Nan Chiau, and the Maris Stella Primary–Secondary link), and it doesn’t separate two genuinely different situations that read the same on paper.

Two different things, both called “affiliation”

How S1 posting actually decides who gets in

Strip away the jargon and it's three layers. First, every child's PSLE score sorts them into one of three Posting Groups — Group 1 is the strongest scores, Group 3 the widest band. You pick one Posting Group and every school choice you list has to sit inside it. Second, within that group, seats go by score first; if two children tie, MOE breaks it by citizenship, then by how highly each of them ranked that school, then — only if it's still tied — a computer ballot.

Affiliation changes exactly one thing inside that process: list the affiliated secondary as your first choice (and clear any extra criteria that specific school sets), and your child jumps into a priority queue ahead of everyone posting there without that link. Better scores still win first inside that queue, and it is genuinely not automatic — by MOE's own rule, at least 20% of every school's seats in every Posting Group stay reserved for non-affiliated applicants, no matter how full the affiliated queue gets. That's the real shape of the "edge": a real, worked-in-your-favour priority queue, not a guaranteed seat.

How to actually read the cut-off numbers

PSLE scores run 4 (best possible) to 32 (worst) — lower is better, the opposite of a percentage. The cut-off point (COP) is the score of the last student MOE still let in that year, so it’s the second number in each range, not the first. That means the real, measurable edge isn’t the affiliation itself — it’s the gap between the affiliated cut-off and the non-affiliated cut-off. A 2–3 point gap is marginal, easily inside normal year-to-year swing. An 8–10+ point gap, which several of these pairs show, is a genuine cushion: it means a child could score meaningfully worse than an open applicant and still get the seat. I’ve done that math below so you’re not just staring at raw ranges — each pairing shows MOE's own score-range table plus the gap spelled out. Buy the house you’d want to live in regardless of the school pathway; if one of these pairs happens to sit inside it, treat the affiliation as a genuine bonus, not the reason you signed.
